How the Tip Jar Works

The Tip Jar lets a viewer on our paid plan send a payment to the filmmaker behind a film. This page explains who can use it, what a filmmaker sees and how the fee works.

How it works for viewers

  1. Open the page of a film. If the film can take tips, you will see the Tip Jar.
  2. Choose an amount.
  3. Pay through Stripe, our payment processor. Stripe sends you a receipt.

The Tip Jar comes with the paid plan, Ad-Free Experience. On the free plan you can see it on a film page and upgrade to use it.

Which films can take tips

A film that is live and approved on The Short Film Show can take tips. The Tip Jar appears on its page automatically, so there is nothing for the filmmaker to switch on.

Tips are not paid out one by one. A filmmaker is paid once their balance, tips and any Impact Fund amounts together, reaches a minimum payment amount.

What a filmmaker sees

Each tip is recorded against the film and shows in the filmmaker’s dashboard, with the amount and the film it was for. Filmmakers do not see who tipped.

Your tip goes to the filmmaker, less a service and processing fee. The fee comes out of your tip: you are never charged more than the amount you choose.

Safety

Payments are taken by Stripe. No payment details are shared between viewers and filmmakers.
