Independent short films rely on audience support. Every film you watch on The Short Film Show represents months of hard work, creativity, and collaboration from people who believe in storytelling as an art form.
The Tip Jar is our way of closing the gap between appreciation and reward.
It lets viewers show real support for the filmmakers they love, instantly and securely, without waiting for sponsorships, grants, or traditional funding systems to catch up.
What the Tip Jar Does
The Tip Jar allows viewers on the ad-free plan to send a small payment directly to the creator of a film.
Think of it like buying the filmmaker a coffee, a prop, or a new memory card, every contribution helps them make more work.
- Tips can be as small or as generous as you choose.
- 90 % of every tip goes directly to the filmmaker.
- 10 % is retained by the platform to cover processing fees and system costs.
There’s no waiting for algorithms or advertising targets. Your support reaches the creator almost immediately through their filmmaker dashboard.
Why We Built It
Short films are one of the hardest formats to fund. They rarely qualify for broadcast budgets and most online platforms pay little or nothing for independent content.
The Tip Jar creates a direct connection between viewer and creator — a simple, transparent way to say “this story mattered to me.”
It’s not a donation scheme or a subscription. It’s a thank-you.
And when enough people say thank-you, filmmakers start to see a meaningful difference.
Who Can Receive Tips
Only verified filmmakers with a live, approved film on The Short Film Show can receive tips.
Once their film meets the minimum watch-time threshold (usually 50 minutes total viewing), the Tip Jar automatically activates on their film’s page.
This ensures that all films receiving tips have been genuinely watched and appreciated by the community.
How Tipping Works for Viewers
- Find a film you love. Watch it to the end or re-watch your favourite moments.
- Click the Tip Jar icon on the film page or player screen.
- Choose your amount — from small gestures to larger contributions.
- Confirm payment through our secure processor (Stripe).
- Your tip is sent directly to the filmmaker’s earnings account.
There are no hidden fees and no extra steps. Viewers receive an email confirmation, and filmmakers see the tip recorded in their dashboard.
Tips can be left any time, whether you’re on the free or paid viewing tier.
How Filmmakers Receive Tips
Filmmakers don’t need to do anything special to enable the Tip Jar; it’s built into their account once a film is approved.
Each tip is logged automatically, showing the amount and the film that earned it.
When total tips reach the £50 minimum payout threshold, the balance becomes eligible for transfer.
Payments are processed quarterly, alongside standard platform payouts, and filmmakers receive a detailed statement for each period.
For transparency, a small £0.50 transfer fee covers payment-processor costs.
Safety and Trust
Every transaction goes through encrypted, PCI-compliant systems via Stripe.
No personal financial data is ever shared between viewers and filmmakers.
The Tip Jar is designed to be safe, professional, and respectful.
Filmmakers can see the total amount they’ve received but not who tipped, unless the viewer chooses to include their name and a short message.
The Bigger Picture
The Tip Jar complements the Filmmaker Impact Fund.
While the Fund distributes shared revenue from subscriptions and advertising, the Tip Jar is pure direct support.
It strengthens the ecosystem by creating a feedback loop between the audience and artist.
When viewers reward films they enjoy, it encourages more creators to submit new work, more often, and at higher quality.
That’s how the platform sustains itself: genuine appreciation flowing both ways.
For Filmmakers: Making the Most of It
- Tell your audience that your film is on The Short Film Show and that the Tip Jar is active.
- Share your film link on social media with a short message like “Watch and support independent film.”
- Keep your profile updated with a director’s bio and social links — it helps viewers connect with you.
- Say thanks. A simple “thank you” message on your film’s page or social posts encourages others to tip as well.
Even small contributions can add up quickly when viewers know their money is going directly to the person behind the camera.
For Viewers: Why It Matters
When you tip a filmmaker, you’re not just supporting one film — you’re supporting the entire short-film ecosystem.
You’re helping someone pay festival fees, rent equipment, feed a crew, or start their next idea.
Every tip, no matter the size, makes the creative cycle possible.
So if you’ve just watched something that made you laugh, cry, or think differently — consider dropping a little into the Tip Jar.
It’s the simplest way to keep great short films coming.
