Playback Quality and Technical Support

The Short Film Show is built for smooth, high-quality playback across all modern devices. This page explains how streaming quality works and what to do if a short film doesn’t play as expected.

1. How Streaming Quality Works

The Short Film Show uses adaptive HLS streaming. This means the quality of a short film adjusts automatically while you watch, based on your internet connection and device performance.

  • The player detects your available bandwidth.
  • It chooses the highest possible resolution that plays smoothly.
  • If your connection changes, the stream adjusts in real time.

This ensures films keep playing without long pauses or buffering, even on slower networks.

Quality by Tier

  • Free Account: Standard Definition (SD) only.
  • Ad Free Tier: HD and 4K quality, where available.

Every film plays in the best quality the filmmaker provides, up to full HD.

2. Recommended Internet Speeds

For the best experience, use a stable broadband or mobile data connection.

QualityMinimum SpeedRecommended Speed
SD (Standard Definition)2 Mbps3 Mbps
HD (High Definition)5 Mbps10 Mbps

If your speed drops below these levels, the player automatically lowers quality to keep playback smooth.

3. Browser and Device Support

Web Browsers

The Short Film Show works on most modern browsers:

  • Chrome (latest three versions)
  • Safari (13 and newer)
  • Edge (latest two versions)
  • Firefox (latest three versions)

Mobile Apps

If you’re using the iOS or Android app, make sure it’s updated to the latest version. App updates include performance improvements and bug fixes that can resolve playback issues.

Smart TVs

Smart TV support is in development. Once launched, films will play natively through the TV app without requiring a browser.

4. Improving Playback Quality

If you notice the picture looks soft or blurry:

  1. Check that you have a stable internet connection.
  2. Close other apps or browser tabs using bandwidth.
  3. Make sure you’re signed in to an Ad Free Tier account if you expect HD quality.
  4. Try refreshing the page — the player may reload a higher-quality stream once your connection stabilises.

Because The Short Film Show uses adaptive streaming, you don’t need to manually select quality. The player always aims for the highest resolution your connection allows.

5. Fixing Common Playback Issues

The short film won’t load or is stuck buffering

  • Refresh the page or restart the app.
  • If using Wi-Fi, move closer to your router.
  • Restart your router or switch to a wired connection if possible.

The sound is out of sync

  • Pause and resume the film.
  • If the issue continues, close and reopen your browser or app.

The player controls don’t respond

  • Clear your browser cache.
  • Ensure JavaScript is enabled.
  • Try another browser or update your current one.

Subtitles aren’t showing or are incorrect

  • Open the subtitle menu and confirm the right language is selected.
  • If they still don’t appear, use the “Report Issue” link on the film page so we can update the file.

6. Performance on Mobile Devices

To save data, mobile networks may automatically restrict playback quality.
If films appear lower quality on mobile:

  • Connect to Wi-Fi for full HD playback.
  • Check your phone’s data-saving settings — some devices limit video resolution to reduce usage.

The app caches small segments for smooth playback, but short films are not downloaded or stored permanently on your device.

7. Accessibility and Playback Controls

The player includes several accessibility features:

  • Keyboard navigation support on desktop
  • Screen reader labels for all controls
  • Subtitles in multiple languages
  • Clear, high-contrast interface

Use the Subtitles (CC) button to toggle captions or change language at any time.

8. Reporting Technical Problems

If a film doesn’t play properly or quality looks incorrect:

  1. Note the film title and describe the issue briefly.
  2. Use the Report Issue button on the film page.
  3. Our team reviews reports daily and updates files when needed.
